Hidden Cradle

We were finalists in the Cradle Mountain Gateway Precinct commission to design an artwork for the foyer, held by Arts Tasmania 2019. Instead of designing a free hanging sculpture as outlined in the brief, we decided to embrace the exciting architecture of the building with a site-specific video work called Hidden Cradle

The form is dictated by the interior architecture of the building itself and the visual content is drawn from physically, historically and seasonally hidden aspects woven into the surrounding landscape

It is a poetic window into the ‘essence’ of Cradle Mountain to provide
glimpses of:

  • geological history and composition of the landscape
  • the unique flora throughout the seasons
  • traces and echoes of past Aboriginal presence and their interaction with the
landscape that has had a bearing over its current form
  • the successive presence of newcomers that has also influenced this land over time
  • underwater life in the lake

HIDDEN CRADLE is a conversation between the artwork and the building
– an ongoing canvas where the shapes, angles, textures, and varying light of the architecture influence the perception of the projected images
